Parent Information to Support Consultation on the New RSE/PSHE Curriculum

Working Together to Shape Our Curriculum

At St John’s, we believe that parents and carers are the first and most important educators of their children. As we review and update our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum, we are inviting parents and carers to share their views and help shape our approach.

The Department for Education requires all primary schools to teach Relationships Education and Health Education, with schools consulting parents when developing or reviewing their policies and curriculum provision.

Why Are We Reviewing Our Curriculum?

Children are growing up in a rapidly changing world. They need age-appropriate knowledge and skills that will help them:

  • Build positive, respectful relationships.
  • Stay safe online and offline.
  • Understand their physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Develop resilience, confidence and self-respect.
  • Recognise unhealthy or unsafe situations and know where to seek help.

Recent updates to national guidance place greater emphasis on topics such as healthy relationships, online safety, consent, respect, personal safety and wellbeing.

What Will Children Learn?

Our curriculum will be carefully planned so that learning is appropriate to pupils’ age and stage of development.

Areas covered include:

Relationships Education

  • Families and people who care for us
  • Friendships
  • Respectful relationships
  • Bullying and discrimination
  • Online relationships
  • Keeping safe and seeking help

Health Education

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy eating
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco awareness
  • Basic first aid
  • Growing and changing

All teaching is delivered sensitively, in a way that reflects the age, maturity and needs of our pupils.

Our Commitment to Parents

We want parents and carers to feel informed and involved throughout this process. We will:

  • Share our draft policy and curriculum overview.
  • Provide opportunities to ask questions and give feedback.
  • Make teaching materials available for parents to view when requested.
  • Consider consultation feedback before finalising our curriculum and policy.

Your Views Matter

We are keen to understand:

  • What you value most within PSHE and RSHE education.
  • Any questions or concerns you may have.
  • Areas where you feel children need additional support.
  • How we can best work in partnership with families.

Feedback from parents will help us ensure our curriculum reflects both statutory requirements and the needs of our school community.
