At Ss John Fisher & Thomas More Catholic Primary, we love reading! We try to share what we most enjoy about reading and encourage the children to read new genres and ever more challenging texts.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading management and monitoring programme that aims to foster independent reading. The internet-based software assesses reading age, and suggests books that match pupils’ needs and interests. Pupils take computerised quizzes on the books and earn AR points as they progress.

Why is reading so important?

Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

In fact, there’s evidence to suggest that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background. We have a lovely library that each class can visit each week, ensure children are reading at home every night and teach our curriculum with high quality texts at the centre. We also complete ‘Book Tasting’ each week with selected pupils.
