International School Awards – Activity 6
Activity 6: Nelson Mandela
Last year, the children learnt about Nelson Mandela as part of the Intermediate Award. We wanted to build upon the children’s knowledge and understanding of his life and work, so we decided to learn more about this significant individual for our International School Award.
1) In Year 1 and Year 2, the children were already learning about animals and their habitats for their science topic.
As part of their learning, the children read information about the animals that live on Robben island – the island Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on. They then created pieces of art using mosaics, which linked to the knowledge and skills they were developing in art lessons. The images were displayed in school and sent to our partner school in South Africa.
2) In Year 5 and Year 6, the children had already read ‘The Long Walk to Freedom’ by Nelson Mandela in a previous activity. They researched him, his life and his dedication for black people’s freedom. They also created short videos about his life using their research. The children devised a large-scale piece of art that represented Nelson Mandela and all he stood for. They also showed what we can do to be more like him. The large piece of artwork is now displayed in the school’s main hall.
